Men's Tennis Seeks To End Duke's 47-Match Winning Streak

April 9, 2002

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The ACC's regular season race in men's tennis has come down to North Carolina (14-4, 5-0) and Duke (13-9, 6-0) for the Wednesday in Durham. Duke has won 47 ACC regular season matches in a row, dating back to Carolina's 4-3 win on April 11, 1996.

Doubles will begin at 4:30 p.m. and singles will start 10 minutes after the completion of doubles. Carolina has won six matches in a row, including wins over #15 VCU and #19 Wake Forest. Duke has won eight of nine matches and owns wins this season over then #1 ranked Illlinois and #6 Pepperdine. The winner of this match will likely host an NCAA Regional on May 11-12. Carolina, currently ranked #29, should crack the nation's top 25 when the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings are released on Wednesday.

Both teams have outstanding #1 singles players. UNC senior Marcio Petrone is 21-5 and ranked 53rd nationally in singles. Duke's Phillip King is 16-5 and ranked 11th in the country.
