Chapel Hill, NC - The North Carolina men's tennis team snapped a two match losing streak with a solid 6-1 defeat of the Charlotte 49ers Monday afternoon. The win moves Carolina to 4-3 on the season.

The afternoon began on a positive note as the Heels won the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. The first UNC doubles victory came at the #3 spot where Trystan Meniane and Chad Riley teamed up to defeat Charlotte's Dawson/McGovern team 8-5. The second doubles victory came in dramatic fashion as Nicholas Monroe and David Cheatwood won in a tiebreaker to take the deciding doubles match. Monroe/Cheatwood battled back and forth with Charlotte duo Jonsson/Oggeson the whole match before facing off in a tiebreaker. After trading points for a majority of the breaker, UNC led 11-10 when a Charlotte groundstroke landed outside of the baseline to secure the Tar Heel victory. Monroe/Cheatwood's winning score was 9-8 (10).

Singles victories came quickly for the Heels as #1 player Marcio Petrone and #5 Greg Archer both won in straight sets. Archer was the first to claim victory, finishing off Jonathan McGovern 6-2, 6-0. Petrone quickly followed suit with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Ola Jonsson.

The Tar Heel victory was clinched at the #4 position as sophomore Trystan Monroe battled back from a one set deficit and defeated Charlotte's Thomas Oggeson 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. The victory gave the Heels a 4-2 lead in the match.

Carolina secured wins in the final two singles matches as #6 Chad Riley and #2 Nicholas Monroe both were victorious. Riley survived a long first set before rallying in the second to a comfortable 7-5, 6-1 win. Freshman Nicholas Monroe dropped his first set of the spring season before fighting back to claim the victory 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. The win moves Monroe to 7-0 on the season.

After going 0-6 in three set matches in their last two outings, the Tar Heels were pleased with their 2-0 mark in three set matches against Charlotte. In addition, all three doubles teams for the Heels were new combinations.

The Carolina men will next be in action on March 10th when they face #9 Texas. The meeting will begin a three match tour of Texas where the Heels will also meet #5 Texas A&M and Rice University.
