CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The Tar Heel Men's Tennis team handed South Carolina its first loss of the season 6-1 Saturday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Seniors Chad Riley and David Cheatwood posted key singles victories as UNC defeated USC for the second consecutive season.

North Carolina jumped to a quick 1-0 lead, taking two of the three doubles matches. David Cheatwood and Trystan Meniane improved their record to 4-0 this spring with a 8-4 victory at the #2 position. Marcio Petrone and Nicholas Monroe followed with a 8-6 victory at #1 to clinch the match's first point.

In singles North Carolina's seniors led the way. Chad Riley clinched the match for the Tar Heels at #6 singles with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Rodrigo Pacheco. David Cheatwood earned UNC's sixth and final point over David Nelson 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. The victory was career win number 50 for the Fayetteville, N.C. senior.

Freshman Nicholas Monroe and sophomore Greg Archer both remained undefeated (4-0) in dual matches this spring. Monroe easily earned Carolina's first singles victory by a 6-2, 6-0 count over Carl Wermee. Meanwhile, Archer fell behind 5-0 in the first set of his match with USC's Marcus Westman. In an amazing reversal, Archer won 12 of the next 15 games to earn a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory and give the Tar Heels a 3-1 lead.

North Carolina (3-1) returns to action next weekend hosting South Florida and Tulsa on Friday and Saturday. South Carolina (3-1) faces Georgia Tech next Saturday in Atlanta.
