CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In an afternoon match at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center, the 51st ranked North Carolina men's tennis team lost to #17 Texas A&M 5-2. The Tar Heels came out strong early in singles competition, but the Aggies eventually won four of six singles matches and two out of three in doubles. The loss leaves North Carolina 3-2 on the year, while the Aggies improve to 2-1.

In singles play, Tar Heel #1 seed Tripp Phillips defeated Shuon Madden in a tough match 3-6, 7-6, 7-5. At #2, Assar Drori lost to Dumitra Caradima, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. Playing at #3, Tar Heel David Cheetwood also took his match to three sets before falling 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 to Cody Hubbell.

Fourth seed Marcio Petrone won for the Tar Heels, besting Keith From 6-2, 7-5. In the #5 match Trystan Meniane was edged by Ryan Newport, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3. Rounding out the singles competition, Chad Riley was defeated 6-3, 6-4, by Juan Aramburo.

In doubles, North Carolina's Cheetwood and Tyne Brownlow beat Newport and Jarin Skube, 8-6. But, Texas A&M prevailed in both the other doubles matches.

The Tar Heels host Brown on Saturday, February 18, in their final indoor match of the 2000 season. Admission is free of charge.
