Men's Tennis Edges Purdue

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The #51-ranked North Carolina men's tennis team won a close match against #66 Purdue to improve to 3-1 in dual-match competition. The Boilermakers were coming off a 4-3 win over #50 Wake Forest, but the Tar Heels were too strong, taking four singles matches and one doubles match. Purdue drops to 2-3 in dual-match play. In singles action, Tripp Phillips lost at the #1 spot to Purdue's Jason Marshall, the 1999 Big Ten singles champion. Phillips forced a second-set tie-breaker, but Marshall held on to win 6-1, 7-6. Assaf Drori won a crucial match at #2 singles, defeating Derek Miller 7-5, 3-6, 7-5. Drori's three-set match was the last to finish, thus becoming the decisive match for the Tar Heels. Junior David Cheatwood won at #3 singles, beating Laith Al-Agba, 6-4, 6-4. Marcio Petrone was a winner at #5 singles, beating Carl McCafferty 6-4, 6-4. At #5 singles, Trystan Meniane defeated Scott Mayer 6-2, 7-5. Chad Riley was defeated at #6 singles, losing to Andrew Wakefield 6-1, 5-7, 6-2. In doubles action, Phillips and Petrone defeated Marshall and Wakefield at #1 doubles 9-6. But Purdue won the #2 and #3 doubles to clutch the doubles point.
The Tar Heels will host #17 Texas A&M at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 18, and Brown at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19.
