Tar Heels Fall To No. 20 Texas

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina men's tennis team was dealt its first loss of the season, dropping all but two matches to #20 Texas, which improved to 5-0 for the season. Four of the six singles matches went to three sets and three singles matches and one doubles match included tie-breakers. Tripp Phillips had match-point at #1 singles, but lost to Brandon Hawk in a match that was decided by a third-set tie-breaker. Carolina's Marcio Petrone and Trystan Meniane were also defeated in three-set matches. Chad Riley was the lone winner for the Tar Heels. Riley defeated Ron Kloppert at the #6 spot, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Tripp Phillips and Marcio Petrone also had match-point in the #1 doubles match, but were unable to convert, losing 9-8 (6) to Texas' Michael Blue and Nick Crowell. The Tar Heels also lost at #2 doubles. At #3 doubles, Carolina's Greg Archer and Assaf Drori combined to defeat Kloppert and Stephen Patak, 8-5. But Texas' wins at #1 and #2 clutched the doubles point for the Longhorns. The Tar Heels will face Purdue on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Boilermakers defeated Wake Forest 4-3 on Saturday, winning the #1, #5, and #6 singles matches and all three doubles matches.
