Tar Heel Trio Takes All-ACC Honors
Nov. 11, 2008
GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina senior forward Brian Shriver and senior midfielder Michael Callahan each earned a spot on the 2008 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Soccer teams, which were announced Tuesday by the league office. Shriver was named to the first team, while Callahan claimed second-team honors. Additionally, defender Sheanon Williams garnered All-Freshman Team accolades. Shriver, who is Carolina's first first-team forward selection since Marcus Storey in 2004, emerged as one of the nation's top scoring threats as a senior. The Clearwater, Fla., native is second in the ACC with 13 goals and is tied for third in the league with 29 points, which rank as the highest total by a Tar Heel since 2005. Shriver, who has netted four game-winning goals and has three multi-goal games on the season, was honored as ACC and national player of the week after scoring twice in Carolina's 2-0 win at Duke earlier this year. For his career, he has totals of 51 points on 21 goals and nine assists. Carolina's team captain and a candidate for the Lowe's Senior Class Award this season, Callahan has started 73 games over the last four seasons and has eight points on two goals and four assists this year. The Cary native has tallied 30 career points on nine goals and 12 assists. A member of the ACC's All-Freshman Team in 2005, Callahan is a three-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll and earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first team honors earlier this month. Williams gives the Tar Heels an All-Freshman selection for the sixth straight season. He has started all 18 games at center back for Carolina and has notched four points on a goal and two assists. Williams has also helped lead Carolina to a quartet of shutouts.
The Tar Heels open play at the 2008 ACC Championships Wednesday against Maryland at noon in Cary. |
