No. 15 Carolina Faces Gamecocks, No. 14 Bruins

Sept. 4, 2008

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 15 North Carolina will look to build on an unbeaten opening weekend when it faces South Carolina and No. 14 UCLA Friday and Sunday at Wake Forest's Deacon Fall Classic at Spry Stadium. The Tar Heels (2-0-0) will take on the Gamecocks (1-0-1) at 5 p.m. Friday and the Bruins (1-1-0) at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Last time out, UNC went unblemished at the Carolina Nike Classic with wins over Florida International and VCU. Junior forward Eddie Ababio led the Tar Heels with a goal and an assist for three points, and senior goalkeeper Jacob Wescoe claimed Co-ACC Player of the Week honors after logging a pair of shutouts in net.

Carolina holds a 15-10-1 edge in the all-time series with South Carolina dating to 1982. The Tar Heels have won six straight in the series, including a 2-0 win in Chapel Hill in the last meeting in 2005. The Gamecocks defeated Clemson in their opener (2-0) and played to a 1-1 draw with Presbyterian Tuesday.

UNC and UCLA have met just once with the Bruins recording a 5-3 win in Fullerton, Calif., in 1993. The Bruins opened the season with a 2-1 overtime loss to Maryland and followed with a 3-0 victory over UC Riverside.

The Tar Heels open conference action and return home to face rival NC State Friday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m.
