WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Sophomore Matt Laycock scored a goal early in the second overtime to lead the fifth-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels to a 1-0 victory in the quarterfinals of the 1999 ACC Men's Soccer Tournament at Spry Stadium Thursday afternoon.

Laycock scored the game winning goal at the 106:03 mark assisted by Michael Bucy.

North Carolina fired 12 shots in the game to Clemson's 10. Tiger goalkeeper Josh Campbell saved six shots while North Carolina goalie Michael Ueltschey tallied four saves.

With the win, the Tar Heels improve to 12-5-1 and advance to play the top-seeded Duke Blue Devils on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Clemson falls to 9-8-2 with the loss.

GOALS: Matt Laycock (UNC), 106:03 (Michael Bucy).

CLEMSON HEAD COACH TREVOR ADAIR

"We've gotten familiar with the feeling cause we've lost a lot of games in overtime. It's an awful feeling. The difference was their goalkeeper made a great save to keep them in it. When we needed a great play, it didn't happen. I'm proud of how we played, we played with a lot of heart."

NORTH CAROLINA HEAD COACH ELMAR BOLOWICH

"We're very excited to win our first round game. It was a very important game for us because we wanted to keep our original goal of an NCAA Tournament bid alive. It's also important because we wanted to show we could beat any team in this conference. Clemson was a very good team, they were very organized and there weren't many opportunities on either side."

NORTH CARLINA'S MATT LAYCOCK

"The pace of the game and momentum was in our favor because we were getting a lot of shots. We pulled the goalie out and the shot was there."
