WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 21st-ranked North Carolina men's soccer team fought to a 1-1 tie with the fourth-ranked Wake Forest at Spry Stadium in front of 2,961 fans Saturday night.

Junior forward Ben Stafford gave Wake a quick 1-0 lead with his goal at the 5:49 mark off an assist from junior Kalle Siira.

The rest of the game was a defensive struggle. At the 53:36 mark Wake Forest starting goalkeeper Sean Conner went down with a sprained ankle and freshman Brad McEachern saw his first collegiate action in the goal as he played the rest of the way. Each team had several chances to score in the second half but neither could manage a goal until Carolina's Chris Carrieri scored with just seven seconds remaining in the game off an assist from Daniel Jackson.

In the two overtime periods, the Tar Heels had several chances to score, but McEachern and the Wake Forest defense was able to stave off the assualt and preserve the tie.

With the tie, Wake Forest is now 11-0-5 overall and 2-0-3 in the ACC, while North Carolina moves to 11-4-1 overall and 2-3-1 in conference play.

Carolina returns to action Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at home versus South Carolina.
