CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Junior goalkeeper Justin Hughes made four saves en route to his third straight shutout as No. 9 North Carolina and No. 4 Duke played to a scoreless draw in front of 3,585 fans and a national television audience Friday at Fetzer Field.

The crowd ranked as the second largest to take in a men's soccer match at Fetzer, training only the 1999 Carolina-Duke meeting which drew 3,825. With the tie, the teams split the Carlyle Cup point for men's soccer, giving the Blue Devils a 3-0.5 advantage in the all-sports competition.

Possession was fairly even in the match, which was televised by the Fox Soccer Channel, but Duke (10-3-2, 3-2-2 ACC) held a 13-7 lead in shots. The Blue Devils were able to put four on frame in the second half, but Hughes was up to the task to claim his fourth shutout in five starts this season.

Hughes came up with a big stop in the 80th minute when he made a diving save on a shot by Duke midfielder Michael Videira. The Blue Devils' Blake Camp was fouled by Tar Heel defender Ted Odgers, and Videira came up with the ball on the ensuing free kick, but Hughes made a lunging save to his left to preserve the shutout.

The Tar Heels (12-3-2, 2-3-2 ACC) were unable to put a shot on goal, as Duke keeper Justin Papadakis posted his fifth shutout without making a save. Carolina squandered one of its best chances in the 106th minute when Corey Ashe sent a cross from the left flank to striker Brian Shriver, who just missed getting a foot on the ball about five yards out.

Neither team could put a shot in frame in the opening half, as the teams combined for just six total shots. Hughes smothered one of the Duke's best opportunities when he came 15 yards out of the net to knock the ball away from Zach Pope and out of bounds in the 39th minute. Hughes made the first save of the match on a Mike Grella shot in the 57th minute.

The Tar Heels now have 10 shutouts on the season, including three straight.

Carolina closes out the regular season Friday, Nov. 4 against Boston College at Fetzer Field at 7 p.m. The 2005 ACC Championship begins Nov. 8 at SAS Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
