Sept. 4, 1999

OMAHA, Neb. -- Led by sophomore Chris Carrieri, North Carolina defeated Bradley, 3-1, Saturday evening in the first game of the Diadora Challenge. Carrieri scored the first goal for the Tar Heels, and assisted on the third, as UNC outshot the Braves 24-9.

Carrieri's goal at the 10:28 mark was assisted by junior Michael Bucy. Freshman Mike Gell scored on a rebound at 27:09 to give North Carolina a 2-0 lead going into half.

In the second half, junior Carson Porter scored on a nice header off of a Carrieri cross to finish North Carolina's scoring. Bradley continued to battle back, scoring on a Collin Carson shot, assisted by Gavin Glinton, to end the scoring at 3-1.

North Carolina will take on seventh-ranked Creighton, tomorrow, at 7:30. Bradley will face 15th-ranked SMU at 5 p.m. SMU and Creighton's contest on Saturday night was cancelled in the 63rd minute because of a power failure at Tranquility Park. Because of the possibility the lights will not be operational, game times for tomorrow's contests will be decided in the morning.
