CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore CJ Steffen converted a seven-yard shot off a pass by freshmen Matt Crawford and Mike Gell at the 42nd minute mark as North Carolina defeated Old Dominion, 1-0, in a scrimmage Saturday afternoon at Finley Field.

UNC dominated the ball during most of the match, although ODU could have taken the lead in the 41st minute when junior keeper Brad Thomas made a crucial save that could have turned the game in ODU's favor. Thomas and sophomore keeper Michael Ueltschey shared the shutout.

The Tar Heels begin the 1999 regular season when they play Bradley at the Diadora Creighton Classic on Sept. 4 in Omaha, Neb.
