April 26, 2001

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's men's lacrosse team spotted Pfeiffer the first goal of the game and then scored nine unanswered goals in the first quarter en route to a 27-7 victory over the Falcons on Thursday afternoon at Henry Stadium.

The Tar Heels ended their regular season with a 6-6 record while the Falcons fell to 5-7 on the campaign.

UNC senior attackman Jeff Sonke scored two goals on the afternoon to move into fifth place all time at Carolina in career goals scored. Sonke improved his total to 102 in his four-year career to move past Merrill Turnbull (1994-97) who was in fifth place with 101 career goals. The only four players to score more goals at Carolina than Sonke are Bert Fett (1972-75), Mac Ford (1982-85), John Webster (1990-93) and Dennis Goldstein (1987-91).

Nineteen different Tar Heel players scored goals in the game led by sophomore attackman Steven Will, who equaled his career high for goals in a game with three set against Butler on March 17, 2001. Six Tar Heels had two goals each--Sonke, sophomore midfielder Austin Garrison, freshman midfielder Lance Zimmerman, freshman midfielder Kevin Frew, sophomore midfielder Jack Alsup and junior attackman Andy Jonas. Will added a career high four assists on the day and he finished with a career high seven points.

Six different Tar Heel players scored their first career goals in the game. This group included Frew and Alsup as well as sophomore defenseman Ben Dobson, freshman midfielder Dave Duffy, junior attackman Steve Perdue and freshman attackman Jesse Kohler.

The Falcons were led by freshman attackman Justin Merson who had three goals and by junior attackman Michael Roop who scored twice.

UNC's 27 goals were the most scored by the Tar Heels since March 31, 1993 when the Tar Heels defeated VMI 27-6 at Henry Stadium.

The game was also the final home appearance for eight Tar Heels seniors--attackman Jeff Sonke, midfielders Mac Hammer, Ryan Damon, Judd Lattimore and Peter Dell'Olio, defensemen Bobby Gormsen and Hunter Sims and goalkeeper Robert D'Urso.
