Men's Lacrosse Falls To Duke In ACC Semifinals

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The No. 2 seeded Duke Blue Devils advanced to the ACC championship game for the third time in four years with a comeback 11-9 win over No. 3 seed North Carolina in the final semifinal at Disney's Wide World of Sports. Starting attackmen Alex Lieske (Timonium, Md.), Greg Patchak (Timonium, Md.) and Kevin Brennan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) each scored two goals in the second half to lift the Blue Devils into the final against No. 1 seed Maryland on Sunday. Down, 7-3 at halftime, Duke rallied for four straight goals in the first nine minutes of the third quarter including back-to-back goals by Lieske to tie the game at 7-7 with 6:15 left in the third quarter. Terrence Keaney (Alexandria, Va.) tied the game on an unassisted goal. Carolina's senior attacker Jeff Sonke (Birmingham, Mich.) briefly regained the lead for UNC with 5:07 left in the third with the Heels' fifth man-up goal of the game (on five chances). Duke's Jimmy Regan (Manhasset, N.Y.) gave the Blue Devils the lead for good with 2:47 left in the third to start another 4-0 run. Patchak scored twice in the first seven minutes of the fourth and Brennan added his second of the game to give the Devils an 11-8 lead. Steven Will (Phoenix, Md.) added his second goal off an assist from Andrew Lucas (Glen Arm, Md.) for the final of 11-9. North Carolina broke on top in the first half with the aide of
four extra-man goals -- on four chances. Kyle Bell (Baltimore, Md.) beat
Matt Breslin (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) twice to put Carolina up 4-1 early
in the second quarter. The Heels got three more goals in the second
quarter from Lance Zimmerman (Cockeysville, Md.), Lucas and Pat Jackson
(Timonium, Md.) to lead 7-3 at intermission.
The Blue Devils take on the No. 1 seed Maryland Terrapins (10-1) in the ACC title game on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The game will be televised live on Comcast SportsNet, Fox Sports South and Sunshine Network.
