Tar Heels Get Back Into Win Column Against UMBC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Seventh-ranked North Carolina broke a three-game losing streak Saturday afternoon by downing spunky UMBC 15-11 before a crowd of 6,235 at Kenan Stadium. The game was played as the second half of a doubleheader following UNC's spring football game. Freshman attackmen Jed Prossner and Mike McCall had big games for the Tar Heels as they improved to 7-3 on the season. The Retrievers fell to 3-5 on the campaign with the loss despite a game effort against a Tar Heel team that dominated the game statistically. Prossner, from Easton, Md., had five goals and one assist, and McCall, from Yorktown, N.Y., had one goal and four assists to lead the Tar Heels offensively. Senior midfielder Pat Jackson, playing his final home game as a Tar Heel, had the best offensive game of his career with three goals and two assists--a five-point effort. Junior attackman Steven Will had two goals and an assist, junior midfielder Austin Garrison had two assists and freshman midfielder Bryant Will and senior midfielder Tim Gosier each added two goals for the Tar Heels. Junior attackman Joey Kestermann led the Retrievers offensively as he had a goal and four assists on the day. Both sophomore attackman Justin Smith and junior midfielder Adam Shiley had three goals for UMBC and sophomore midfielder Franklin Berry added a pair of goals.
Carolina got on the board on a goal by Steven Will with 12:36 left in the
first quarter but Berry answered that goal 2:24 later to make it 1-1. That
was the only tie of the game. UNC won the ensuing faceoff and scored six
seconds after Berry's goal as Prossner took a pass from McCall, who had his
first career start, to put Carolina in the lead for good at 2-1.
After Will scored his second goal and Jon Harasym scored for UMBC, the Tar Heels went on a 3-0 run in 1:20 late in the first quarter to take a 6-2 lead at the end of the period. UNC's senior middies led the run with Jackson scoring back-to-back goals and then Gosier scoring the first of his two goals. Gosier's goal was the last unassisted goal of the game for UNC which had assists on 13 of its 15 goals. Goals by Kestermann and Smith cut UNC's lead to 6-4 with 2:21 left before intermission but Prossner scored twice in the last 1:20 of the half to restore Carolina's four-goal lead. UMBC made a serious run at the Tar Heels in the third quarter as Shiley wrapped goals around an extra-man score by Smith to cut UNC's lead to 8-7 with 5:48 left in the period. Carolina responded with a run of its own, however, as the Tar Heels scored seven of the next eight goals in the game. Bryant Will started the run with UNC's first extra-man goal with 3:39 left in the third quarter and then Gosier scored off an assist by Steven Will 25 seconds into the fourth quarter to make it 10-7 in favor of Carolina. After Shiley scored his third goal of the game with 11:23 to play, UNC responded with a goal by McCall, assisted by Garrison, just 13 seconds later to build the lead back to 11-8. Prossner added a goal at 9:24 of the final period and then UNC scored three extra-man goals in a span of 1:47 to boost the lead to 15-8 with 2:22 to play. Jackson, Prossner and Bryant Will scored the goals in the explosive burst. UMBC cut the final margin with three goals in a span of 38 seconds from the 1:45 mark to the 1:07 mark of the final quarter as Berry, Scott Steele and Smith dented the scoreboard. After a slow start, UNC freshman goalie Paul Spellman played a great second half with 12 saves after intermission. He played 57:38 in goal with 14 saves and eight goals allowed. UNC benefitted from great play in the faceoff circle as freshman Paul Burnett and sophomore Kevin Frew combined to win 22 of 29 faceoffs. The Tar Heels had 47 shots to 37 for UMBC although the Retrievers outshot the Tar Heels 29-19 in the second half. Carolina had 46 ground balls to 37 for the Retrievers. Carolina returns to action next Friday in the semifinals of the 2002 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C. Virginia is the tournament's #1 seed but seedings for UNC, Maryland and Duke must be determined on Monday since the three teams all tied for second with 1-2 ACC records. Semifinals game are at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. next Friday. The semifinal winners will play for the championship next Sunday at 3 p.m. UMBC closes its season with a four-game homestand beginning Wednesday night against Towson at 7 p.m.
