Carolina Golfer O'Connell Ties For 20th At Western Refining All-America Golf Classic

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Kevin O'Connell, a sophomore on the University of North Carolina golf team, finished in 20th place at the 34th annual Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic which was played at the El Paso Country Club, a par 71, 6,842-yard layout. O'Connell fired a one-over-par 72 in the first and final rounds with a three-over 74 in the second round to finish with a five-over 218 total. Oklahoma State's Trent Leon and Marquette's Mike Van Sickle tied for medalist honors at the end of regulation at six-under-par 207. Van Sickle won the championship carding a birdie on the sixth playoff hole, the longest playoff in tournament history. Van Sickle, a senior, fired an eight-under 63 in Tuesday's final round while Leon, also a senior, fired a five-under 66. Jorge Campilo of Indiana finished one stroke back in third place at five-under 208 after firing a seven-under 64 in the final round. Matthew Giles of Southern California and Corey Nagy of Charlotte tied for fourth place at four-under 209 while a trio of players tied for sixth place with two-under 211 totals - Penn State's Kevin Foley, Texas' Charlie Holland and Sonoma State's Jarin Todd. O'Connell carded two top-10 finishes for the Tar Heels this fall. He tied for sixth place at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala., and tied for 10th at the Maryland Intercollegiate. One Tar Heel has won this prestigious tournament as Davis Love, III was the champion in 1984.
