Three Carolina Golfers Qualify For U.S. Open

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Three former University of North Carolina golfers have qualified to play in the 2008 U.S. Open Championship. Davis Love III, Fernando Figueroa and Kevin Silva all qualified at 14 sectional qualifiers held Monday, 13 in the U.S. and one in England. The 2008 U.S. Open will be played June 12-15 at Torrey Pines South Course in LaJolla, Calif., a par 72, 7,607-yard layout. Love and Figueroa qualified at separate sectional qualifiers in Columbus, Ohio - Love at Brookside Golf Course and Ohio State's Scarlet Course and Figueroa at Springfield Country Club. Silva was the medalist at the qualifier played in Purchase, N.Y. at Old Oaks Country Club. Love, a native of Sea Island, Ga., fired rounds of 72-66 for a 138 total and will be making his 18th consecutive appearance in the U.S. Open. A member of the PGA Tour since 1986, Love has captured 19 PGA victories, is a six-time member of the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup, and a five-time member of the World Cup Team. Love, a member of the 1983-1985 Carolina golf teams, was a three-time All-America and three-time All-ACC performer as a Tar Heel. He won six collegiate titles, including the 1984 ACC Championship. Figueroa, from El Salvador, played on the 2003-2006 Tar Heel teams. He qualified at Springfield Country Club in Columbus, Ohio, after firing two rounds of 67 for a 134 total. Silva, from New Bedford, Mass., played on the 2003-2005 Tar Heel teams. He was the medalist of the qualifier in Purchase, N.Y., firing rounds of 70-69 for a 139 total at Old Oaks Country Club. Two former Tar Heels, Rob Bradley and Dustin Bray, will be participating in The Rex Hospital Open, a Nationwide Tour event which will be played June 5-8 at the TPC Wakefield Plantation in Raleigh. Bradley, a two-time All-America and two-time All-ACC selection, played for Carolina 1993-1996 and won two collegiate tournaments. Bray, who played on the 2001-2004 teams, is a three-time All-America and four-time All-ACC selection. He is the winningest golfer in school history with seven victories to his credit.
