Carolina's O'Connell Selected To All-Freshman Team

June 2, 2008

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - University of North Carolina freshman Kevin O'Connell has been named to the Division I men's golf All-Freshman Team. Other players selected were Rickie Fowler of Oklahoma State, Harris English and Russell Henley of Georgia, and Sihwan Kim of Stanford. Fowler was the recipient of the Phil Mickelson Award presented by the Phil and Amy Mickelson Foundation as the most outstanding freshman in Division I men's golf.

O'Connell, this year's ACC Freshman of the Year, has carded seven top-10 and nine top-20 finishes in Carolina's 11 tournaments. O'Connell boasts a 71.66 stroke average, the low for the team. He fired 14 scores under-par, 10 of those in the 60s. In addition, he posted seven even par scores. O'Connell, an All-ACC performer this year, has been Carolina's top performer in seven of 11 tournaments. He has also been chosen to participate in the U.S.-Japan Matches in Tokyo in July.
