Carolina Golfers Finish Sixth At Jerry Pate Intercollegiate

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team finished in sixth place at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. The Tar Heels fired a four-over-par 284 in the final round to finish at three-over 843. Carolina fired earlier rounds of three-over 283 and four-under 276. Sophomore Kevin O'Connell led the Tar Heels tying for sixth place in the individual race. O'Connell, from Cary, N.C., finished at three-under-par 207 after firing rounds of 67-70-70. Jack Fields, a freshman from Southern Pines, N.C., finished two strokes behind O'Connell at 209 and tied for 11th place. Fields carded a three-over 73 in the final round after earlier rounds of even par 70 and four-under 66. Junior David Holzworth, from Chapel Hill, tied for 23rd place with a three-over 213 total with rounds of 72-69-72. Robert Riesen, a senior from Pinehurst, N.C., finished with a five-over 215 total after firing a one-under 69 in the final round to tie for 32nd place while Henry Zaytoun III, a sophmore form Raleigh, N.C., tallied a 218 total and tied for 42nd place after carding a 73 in the final round. The Tar Heels finished 13 strokes behind champion and host school Alabama which fired a 10-under 830 total. Auburn finished six strokes behind the Crimson Tide at four-under 836. SMU finished in third place at two-under 838 while Baylor finished fourth at 839 and UNLV placed fifth at one-over 841, two strokes in front of the Tar Heels.
Kelly Kraft of SMU captured the individual crown with a six-under-par 204 total after rounds of 67-68-69. Glenn Northcutt of Auburn and Eddie Olson of UNLV finished one stroke back in a tie for second place at five-under 205. Georgia State's Allen John and UNLV's Derek Ernst tied for fourth place with 206 totals while Carolina's O'Connell tied for sixth place with Baylor's Cody Paladino and Auburn's Cole Moreland. The 54-hole event was played at the Old Overton Club which features a par 70, 6,934-yard layout. In other action, five Carolina golfers played in the Duke Coca-Cola Individual Collegiate where sophomore Philip Chauncey captured medalist honors. Chauncey, from Durham, N.C., fired a two-under-par 69 in the final round for a one-over 214 total to finish three strokes ahead of Florida's Tim McKenney. Chauncey fired earlier rounds of 74-71. Tar Heel Chase MacFarland finished in a three-way tie for third place with East Carolina's Tripp Brizedine and Augusta State's Carter Newman as the trio carded a six-over 219 total. MacFarland, a junior from Savannah, Ga., posted a 77 on the final day after firing an even par 71 in each of the first two rounds. Matt Raudenbush, a freshman for the Tar Heels from Pine Valley, N.J., tied for 17th place with an 11-over 224 total while Ryan Holler, a senior from Morehead City, N.C., tied for 20th at 225 and Patrick Barrett, a freshman from Pinehurst, N.C., tied for 30th with a 229 total. The 54-hole event was played at The Duke Golf Club which features a par 71, 6,961-yard layout. The Tar Heels conclude their fall campaign Oct. 24-26 when they travel to Jonesborough, Tenn., to play in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges. |
