Birmingham, Ala. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team is in fourth place after shooting a three-over-par 283 in the first round of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. The Tar Heels are five strokes behind host Alabama and SMU, which share the lead with a two-under-par 278.
Sophomore Kevin O'Connell, of Cary, N.C., led the Tar Heels with a three-under-par 67. O'Connell is in a three-way tie for second place after the first round. Jack Fields, a freshman from Southern Pines, N.C., fired an even par 70 and is tied for 14th place, while David Holzworth carded a two-over-par 72. Holzworth, a junior from Chapel Hill, N.C., is tied for 24th place. Senior Robert Riesen, from Pinehurst, N.C., and Henry Zaytoun III, a sophomore from Raleigh, N.C., are both tied for 37th after firing rounds of 74.
"I was proud of Kevin getting back to shooting low scores," Carolina head coach John Inman said. "We've got a long way to go. There is a lot of golf left to play."
While Alabama and SMU share the lead, UNLV sits four strokes back in third place. Baylor and North Florida trail the Tar Heels by two strokes and are tied for fifth place. Georgia State is in seventh place and UAB is tied for eighth place with Auburn.
Eddie Olson, of UNLV, sits atop the individual leader board after carding a four-under-par 67. Tied for second place with Carolina's O'Connell are Jordan Payne of Memphis and Kelly Kraft of SMU. UAB's Adam West is currently in fifth place.
The 54-hole event, hosted by the University of Alabama, is being played at Old Overton Club in Birmingham. Play continues on Monday afternoon and concludes on Tuesday. Six of the tournament's 12 teams are nationally ranked. The course features a par 70, 6934-yard layout.
