The UNC Men's Golf Team Leads Maryland Intercollegiate

CAMBRIDGE, MD. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team fired a four-under-par 280 to grab the first-round lead at the Maryland Intercollegiate. Junior Henry Zaytoun III, from Raleigh, N.C., led the Tar Heels by firing a five-under 66 to grab sole possession of the individual lead. Tar Heel junior Kevin O'Connell, from Cary, N.C., fired a one-under 70 and is tied for sixth place. David Holzworth, a senior from Chapel Hill, shot an even-par 71 to tie for 11th place while freshman Michael McGowan, from Southern Pines, N.C., carded a 73 to tie for 23rd and sophomore Jack Fields, also from Southern Pines, shot 74 and is tied for 33rd. Carolina holds a three-stroke lead over the 15-team field. Kent State is in second place with a one-under 283. Virginia Commonwealth is in third place at even-par 284 while NC State is fourth at 286, Akron is fifth at 288 and host Maryland is sixth at 290. Zaytoun's five-under 66 is three strokes ahead of four players who are tied for second at two-under 69 - Kent State's Brett Cairns and John Furlong, VCU's Lanto Griffin and NC State's Mitch Sutton. Carolina's O'Connell is tied for sixth place at one-under 70 along with VCU's Vincent Nadeau, NC State's Brad Revell, Maryland's Donnie Shin and Texas State's Alastair Jones. Another Tar Heel, Holzworth, is one one of seven players deadlocked in 11th place at even-par 71.
The 54-hole event continues through Sunday and is being played at River Marsh Golf Club, a par 71, 6,400-yard layout. |
