Carolina's Martin Ureta Tied For 61st Place At NCAA Championship

OWINGS MILLS, MD. - University of North Carolina golfer Martin Ureta struggled in the third round shooting a 10-over-par 80 for a 12-over 222 total and tied for 61st place at the NCAA Championship. Scores were high in the third round as players contended with light rain and drizzle all day. Ureta, a sophomore from Santiago, Chile, who was competing as an individual, failed to qualify for the fourth and final round as the field was trimmed to the top 15 teams and top six individuals not on those 15 teams. Michael Putnam of Pepperdine leads all individuals with a three-under 207 total after carding a three-over 73 in the third round. Roberto Castro of Georgia Tech and Major Manning of Augusta State are one stroke back in second place with 208 totals. Kentucky's John Holmes and Georgia Southern's Aron Price are tied for fourth place with 211 totals while a pair of Southern California players, Taylor Wood and Joshua Wooding, are tied for sixth place at 212. Georgia leads the team race going into the final round with a 15-over 855 total. Georgia Tech is nine strokes back in second place with an 864 total. Southern California is in third place at 875 while five teams are deadlocked in fifth place with 877 totals - Duke, Arizona State, Washington, Kentucky and Augusta State. The other teams surviving the cut are Georgia State, Brigham Young, New Mexico, Tennessee, Oklahoma State and Georgia Southern. The final round of the 72-hole event will be played Saturday at Caves Valley Golf Club which features a par 70, 7,131-yard layout.
