Carolina's Martin Ureta Tied For 21st Place At NCAA Championship

OWINGS MILLS, MD. - University of North Carolina golfer Martin Ureta fired a four-over-par 74 for a two-over 142 total and is tied for 21st place after the second round of the NCAA Championship. Ureta, a sophomore from Santiago, Chile, is eight strokes behind second-round leader Michael Putnam of Pepperdine who has fired a pair of 67s for a six-under 134 total. Major Manning of Augusta State is alone in second place with a 135 total while Georgia Tech's Roberto Castro and Washington's James Lepp are tied for third place at 137. Five players are deadlocked in fifth place - Brigham Young's Oscar Alvarez, Missouri's Shawn Jasper, Tennessee's Ross McGowan, Duke's Michael Schachner and Georgia's Brendon Todd. Ureta is competing as an individual as he is the only Tar Heel to qualify after the Tar Heel team failed to make the cut in the NCAA East Regional. The 72-hole event is being played at Caves Valley Golf Club which features a par 70, 7,131-yard layout. Georgia leads the field of 30 teams with a two-under 558 total. Tennessee is nine strokes back in second place with a 567 total while Georgia Tech is third at 569, Southern California is fourth at 572 and four teams are tied for fifth place with 574 totals - UNLV, Duke, Georgia State and Washington. Following Friday's third round, the field will be cut to the top 15 teams and top six individuals not on those 15 teams.
