Men's Golf Climbs One Spot in Second Round Of ACC Championship

Day Two Results in PDF Format NEW LONDON, N.C. - Sitting in tenth place after one day at the ACC Championship, the Carolina men's golf team dropped nine strokes off their first round total to move into ninth place and only one stroke off eighth place. Junior Ted Smith helped lead the turnaround with a one-over 73. Smith bettered his score from the first round by four strokes and moved into a tie for sixteenth up from twenty-sixth. Four of the five Tar Heels dropped strokes in the second round, especially junior Kevin Silva who shot a 76 after a day one 83. Georgia Tech moved into a tie with Duke for the tournament lead as the two teams began to pull away from the field. They finished the day at seven-over par and nine strokes ahead of third place NC State. Clemson and Virginia round out the top five while Florida State, Wake Forest and Maryland sit in the three spots ahead of the Tar Heels. Duke's Ryan Blaum sits as the 36-hole leader after a one-under 71 for a two-day total of 139. Blaum increased his lead to four strokes over Georgia Tech's Roberto Castro and Clemson's Jack Ferguson who are in a tie for second at one-under. The tournament concludes with another round of 18 Sunday at the par-72 Old North State Club with the winner claiming the 2005 ACC Men's Golf Championship.
