Men's Golf Team Finishes Sixth at Courtyard Intercollegiate

April 10, 2005

HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C.-- With only a handful of holes to finish up their rain-delayed second round, the Carolina men's golf team made the most of their limited opportunity. When the weather intervened to stop play on Friday afternoon the Tar Heels sat in ninth place with four to six holes to go on their scorecards. The day off apparently did them well as they finished the second round with three birdies to move up three spots into sixth.

Duke also took advantage of the break overcoming a three shot deficit to pass Wake Forest and capture the one-shot tournament victory over the Demon Deacons and Georgia Southern. The Blue Devils finished the tournament at 16-under after two straight rounds of 280. NC State and Virginia flopped spots at fourth and fifth asACC teams comprised five of the top six.

Georgia Southern's Aron Price dropped two birdies on Sunday to lower his score to 14-under par and run away with the six stroke tournament championship over NC State's Taylor Crosby and Duke's Michael Schachner. Duke's Ryan Blaum and Wake Forest's Kyle Reifers both finished seven strokes back. Junior Jonathan Jackson, with two birdies, moved from twenty-second up to eleventh to lead Carolina. Junior Ted Smith also finished under par at one-under while Martin Ureta posted a two round total of one-over 145. Junior Kevin Silva after a strong two-under first round finished the tournament at five-over.
