April 8, 2005
HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. - Despite the low scores throughout the morning, it was the weather that finally got the best of the Devil's Ridge Golf Club Friday. Tournament officials were forced to halt play just after most players had completed their first nine of the second round. The threat of lightning and storms caused postponement of lay for the reaminder of Friday and all Saturday. The second round will be completed at 10 AM Sunday while the final round of the tournament will be canceled. When play was halted the Tar Heels found themselves in ninth place at a combined one-over with anywhere from four to six holes remaining to be played on the team's scorecards. Carolina had slipped a little after finishing the opening round in fifth place at three-under par. Fellow ACC members Wake Forest and Duke sat atop the leaderboard at 20 and 17-under, respectively. Georgia Southern, after a blistering 15-under to lead after one round, had fallen into third at 14-under when play was halted. Two more ACC schools, Virginia and NC State, round out the top five. Georgia Southern's Aron Price pulled away from the field with a first round 64 and sat at 12-under when play was halted. Webb Simpson of Wake Forest began to close the gap in the second by ending the day at nine-under after only a first round 70. For the Tar Heels, juniors Jonathan Jackson and Ted Smith led the way at one-under and even par as Friday's action concluded. Junior Kevin Silva also ended the day at even par while sophomore Martin Ureta sat at two over.
