Tar Heel Golf Team Finishes Fourth At Seminole Intercollegiate

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. - In an effort to avoid the thunderstorms and rain predicted for Tuesday, the Seminole Intercollegiate concluded on Monday with the final two rounds of play. The Tar Heels, in their first event of the spring campaign, fired a one-under-par 287 in the second round followed by a two-over 290 to post a three-over 867 total, good for a fourth-place finish. Host Florida State captured the team title with a six-under 858 total. "It's our first tournament back and I'm proud of our effort," said Tar Heel head coach John Inman. "We really battled and and we're ready to get out there and do it again." Carolina freshman Kevin O'Connell, from Cary, N.C., got the day off to a blazing start firing a six-under 66 in a round that was highlighted by six birdies and no bogies. O'Connell followed that with an even par 72 in the final round to finish at six-under 210 in a tie for third place. Senior Barden Berry, from Kinston, N.C., fired a three-under 69 in the final round after scoring an ace on the par-3, 135-yard 12th hole with a pitching wedge that took one bounce and rolled in the hole. That followed a 75 in the second round for a one-over 217 total and a tie for 11th place. Reed Darsie, a senior from Chapel Hill, fired a pair of one-over 73s in the last two rounds to finish with a four-over 220 total in a tie for 24th place. Freshman Henry Zaytoun, from Raleigh, N.C., finished with a 224 total after posting rounds 73-76 to tie for 35th place. David Holzworth, a sophomore from Chapel Hill, carded rounds of 77-78 for a 226 total to tie for 43rd place.
Jon Curran of Vanderbilt captured the individual title after firing a pair of 68s in the final two rounds for a 10-under 206 total. Jay Moseley of Auburn was the runner-up three strokes back at 209 after posting rounds of 68 and 70 on Monday. Zach Sucher of Alabama-Birmingham tied with Carolina's O'Connell for third place at six-under 210. Virginia's Steven Rojas finished alone in fifth place with a 212 total while a trio of players tied for sixth place with 215 totals - Florida State's Jonas Blixt, Louisville's Daryl Fathauer and Mississippi's David Marino. Auburn was the runner-up to Florida State in the team race with a two-under 862 total. Virginia finished third at 866. Following the Tar Heels' three-over 867 fourth-place finish, three teams tied for fifth at nine-over 873 - Louisville, Vanderbilt and Alabama-Birmingham. The 54-hole event was played at Golden Eagle Country Club which features a par 72, 7,041-yard layout. The Tar Heels return to action March 9-10 at the General Hackler Championship in Murrells Inlet, S.C. |
