Football Student-athlete Killed Early Saturday Morning

Dec. 7, 2002

CHAPEL HILL --- Carl Smalls, a defensive tackle on the University of North Carolina football team, was shot and killed Saturday morning.

The shooting apparently occurred at approximately 2 a.m. outside a private fraternity party in Columbia, S.C.

Smalls, a junior, transferred to UNC from the University of South Carolina prior to the 2001 season, which he sat out due to NCAA transfer regulations. He played in seven games in 2002 and made four tackles.

"Our hearts and prayers are with Carl's family as they deal with this tragedy,' said head coach John Bunting. "It's a senseless end to a young man's life, and I can't begin to think of the pain his family is going through at this time. We will be there for the family in whatever way we can. We will be sure to have counselors available for our players as they also feel this loss."

Coach Bunting spoke with the Smalls family Saturday afternoon.

Media requesting further information should contact the Richland County (Columbia) Police Department in South Carolina.
