NFL Update: Week 5
Oct. 10, 2006 For the fourth straight week, former Tar Heel Julius Peppers was able to get to the quarterback recording sack number six of the season. The six sacks on the season are tied for the NFL lead with Trent Cole of the Eagles. Willie Parker returned to action in Week 5 following his bye week and managed to find the end zone for the third time this season. Through four games, Parker is currently averaging 81.3 rushing yards per game. Peppers and the Panthers will travel to Baltimore for Week 6, while Parker and the Steelers will host the Chiefs. Sam Aiken, Buffalo Bills - Played wide receiver in the Bills' 40-7 loss to the undefeated Chicago Bears. Ethan Albright, Washington Redskins - Played long snapper in the Redskins' 19-3 loss to the New York Giants. Dre' Bly, Detroit Lions - Started at cornerback for the Lions and had three tackles along with one pass defense and a forced fumble in the Lions' 26-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Jason Brown, Baltimore Ravens - Made his first start of the season at left guard as the Ravens fell to the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football, 13-3. Alge Crumpler, Atlanta Falcons - Bye week. Ronald Curry, Oakland Raiders - Started at wide receiver and caught four passes for a game-high 94 yards as the Raiders lost to the San Francisco 49ers, 34-20. Curry's long catch of the day was for 39 yards, and he also made contributions on special teams with two tackles. Russell Davis, Seattle Seahawks - Bye week. Ebenezer Ekuban, Denver Broncos - Started at right defensive end and notched three tackles and a sack as the Broncos were able to hold on and beat the Baltimore Ravens, 13-3. Greg Ellis, Dallas Cowboys - Started at linebacker and led the Cowboys in tackles with five as the Cowboys lost a thriller to the Philadelphia Eagles, 31-24. Ellis' big play of the day came on a sack of Donovan McNabb where he forced a fumble that was picked up by teammate Demarcus Ware and returned for a touchdown that put the Cowboys ahead at the time. Madison Hedgecock, St. Louis Rams - Started at fullback for the Rams and caught one pass for a yard as the Rams edged the Green Bay Packers, 23-20. William Henderson, Green Bay Packers - Played fullback and had one kick return for four yards as the Packers lost to the Rams, 23-20. Vonnie Holliday, Miami Dolphins - Started at defensive tackle and recorded two tackles as the Dolphins fell to the New England Patriots, 20-10. Keith Newman, Miami Dolphins - Played linebacker in the Dolphins' 20-10 loss to the Patriots. Willie Parker, Pittsburgh Steelers - Started at running back and had 14 carries for 57 yards and a touchdown as the Steelers fell to the San Diego Chargers, 23-13, and fell to 1-3 on the season. Parker also reeled in three catches for 26 yards on the day. Julius Peppers, Carolina Panthers - Started at left defensive end recording one forced fumble and recovery, four tackles, one sack, and one pass defense as the Panthers beat the Cleveland Browns, 20-12. Jeff Reed, Pittsburgh Steelers - Converted two field goals from 39 and 44 yards out and had one extra point as the Steelers came off their bye week with a loss to the Chargers, 23-13. Jeff Saturday, Indianapolis Colts - Started at center as the Colts pulled out a late victory over the Tennessee Titans, 14-13. Jonas Seawright, New York Giants - Not active in Week 5. Gerald Sensabaugh, Jacksonville Jaguars - Played safety and recorded two tackles and a punt block in the second quarter that set up a Jaguars touchdown to put them ahead 21-0. Jacksonville beat the New York Jets, 41-0. Brian Simmons, Cincinnati Bengals - Bye week. Ryan Sims, Kansas City Chiefs - Played defensive tackle and notched one tackle as the Chiefs held on to beat the Arizona Cardinals, 23-20. Jeb Terry, Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Not active in Week 5. David Thornton, Tennessee Titans - Started at linebacker and recorded a team-high 10 tackles along with a forced fumble as the Titans defense held the potent Colts offense to just 14 points. However, the Titans still fell, 14-13. Greg Warren, Pittsburgh Steelers - Played long snapper as the Steelers fell to the Chargers, 23-13.
