Carolina Waterscapes Player Of The Week: Dan Orner
Sept. 9, 2002
Dan Orner tied an NCAA record by kicking three field goals of at least 50 yards in UNC's 30-22 win over Syracuse and is the Carolina Waterscapes Student-Athlete of the Week for September 2-8, 2002. Orner, who transferred to UNC from Michigan State and sat out last season, kicked field goals from 52, 51, 55 yards. They were his first three career college field goal attempts. Orner never attempted a field goal at Michigan State and did not attempt a FG in the season-opener vs. Miami (Ohio). Orner tied an NCAA record with three field goals of at least 50 yards in the same game. The others to accomplish the feat were Jerry DePoyster of Wyoming in 1966, Sergio Lopez-Chavero of Wichita State in 1984 and Tim Douglas of Iowa in 1998. Orner's 55-yard kick was a school record and the longest ever by a Syracuse opponent in the Carrier Dome. The previous UNC record was a 54-yarder by Kenny Miller against Florida State in 1985. Prior to the Syracuse game, no Tar Heel had ever kicked more than one 50-yard field goal in a season, let alone one game. In just one game, Orner kicked the longest and the fifth and sixth longest field goals in Carolina history. Orner is a junior from Warwick, N.Y.
Other nominees: Malaika Underwood, a senior outside hitter led the volleyball team to a 3-0 record last week as the No. 23 Tar Heels won the University of San Diego Invitational. Underwood was named MVP of the tournament. She led the team with an outstanding .354 hitting percentage in the tournament and was second on the team with 32 digs and 35 kills while playing in her hometown. Kerry Falgowski, a sophomore forward from Landenberg, Pa., scored four goals in two games as the field hockey team finished third in the Temple Invitational.
