Carolina Team Wins Spring Game, 56-24

April 21, 2001

Chapel Hill, N.C. ----- North Carolina quarterbacks completed 22 of 36 passes for 326 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday's Spring Game at Kenan Stadium in front of approximately 5,000 fans. The "Carolina" team, which consisted mainly of first-team players, defeated the "Tar Heels," 56-24, using a modified scoring system in which additional points were awarded for defensive plays.

"I'm pleased with what we did on the field today, with the exception of the delay-of-game and pre-snap penalties we had on offense," said Head Coach John Bunting. "We have big-play people on all sides of the ball, offense, defense and special teams. The running backs did a great job for us.

"I think you'll see that we'll be aggressive and throw the ball downfield. We'll battle and come back from second and long. We'll fight you and we'll battle. There's a new spirit about them."

Junior Luke Huard was 9 of 12 for 103 yards and had one touchdown pass, red-shirt freshman Aaron Leak was 4 of 8 for 83 yards and a touchdown and red-shirt freshman Darian Durant was 8 of 14 for 135 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore walk-on Landon Mariani was 1 of 2 for five yards. The quarterbacks rotated from team to team.

Junior wideout Bosley Allen was the top receiver among 11 players who caught passes. Allen had five receptions for 81 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown catch that gave "Carolina" an 11-3 lead early in the first quarter.

"Bosley Allen is a big-play guy, and we'll find a way to get the ball in his hands," said Bunting. "He can really run after the catch. I think there is a heck of a lot more in (offensive coordinator) Gary Tranquill's playbook than you saw today, that's for sure. But, you saw that he's willing to go deep with the ball. We're going to stretch the defense."

Kicking for the "Tar Heels," Jeff Reed boomed a 51-yard field goal to close the gap to 13-6 prior to the start of the second quarter. Leak connected with senior Kory Bailey on a 42-yard touchdown play to increase the lead to 23-8. Kevin Knight fell on a fumbled punt return in the end zone to close the gap to 23-15.

Sophomore Willie Parker, who rushed for 119 yards on 14 carries, scored on a 3-yard touchdown in the first half. Sophomore Andre' Williams started the game at tailback and carried 15 times for 88 yards. Walk-on Michael Harris chipped in 23 yards on 14 carries and scored on a 3-yard touchdown run.

In addition to the traditional scoring format, additional points were awarded for defensive plays, including tackles for loss, sacks, interceptions, three-and-outs, passes broken up, fumble recoveries and fumbles caused.

Senior defensive end Joey Evans scored four points with a sack and two tackles for loss. In addition to his fumble recovery for a touchdown, Knight had two pass break ups and a team-high seven tackles.
