Steve Hagen enters his first season at North Carolina and will tutor the Tar Heels' tight ends.

Hagen, who spent four seasons as Butch Davis's tight ends (2001-03) and quarterbacks coach (2004) with the Cleveland Browns, comes to Carolina after spending one season as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Fresno State. A native of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Hagen was Davis's first hire at UNC.

Hagen coached Kelly Holcomb and Jeff Garcia in Cleveland and helped the Browns reach the NFL playoffs in 2002. Prior to his work in the NFL, Hagen was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Cal from 1999-2000, and spent two seasons at San Jose State as quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator in 1997- 98. He was the head coach at Wartburg College (Iowa) in 1996, guiding the team to a 7-3 record and a No. 8 ranking in Division III in total offense.

Hagen served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at UNLV from 1994-95. The Rebels broke 20 school offensive records in two seasons and beat Central Michigan, 52- 24, in the 1994 Las Vegas Bowl. As the wide receivers coach at UNLV in 1990, he coached current NFL star Keenan McCardell.

From 1992-93, Hagen was the quarterbacks coach at Nevada. The Wolf Pack were among the nation's most productive offensive teams, leading the nation in total offense (569.1 ypg) and passing yards (397.5 ypg). Nevada played in the inaugural Las Vegas Bowl in 1992.

Hagen spent the 1991 season as the quarterbacks coach at Kent State. In 1990, he was a graduate assistant receivers coach under Lou Holtz at Notre Dame, where he worked with Raghib "Rocket" Ismail and the Fighting Irish defeated Colorado, 21-6, in the 1990 Orange Bowl. He also held coaching positions at Northern Arizona, Illinois and Kansas from 1984-88.

Hagen was a wide receiver at Cal Lutheran from 1979-83, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in business. He and his wife, Amy, have four children, Nash, Hanna, Wil and Soren.
