One of the best tight ends in college football. A preseason first-team All-America (The Sporting News). Rated the #1 tight end in America by National Football Scouting Inc. He is one of seven returning first-team All-ACC selections from a year ago (four of them on offense). A first-team All-ACC selection in 2000 by Athlon. Has 45 career receptions and four touchdowns. Received first-team all-conference honors in 1999, one year after a serious knee injury forced him to miss an entire season. A complete player. Has good hands and is an outstanding run blocker.

1999 -- Junior Season
Earned first-team All-ACC honors in his first year back after missing a season due to injury. Started all 11 games. Made 20 receptions for 191 yards, an average of 9.6 yards per catch. Had at least one catch in seven of the 11 contests. Had a season-high six receptions for 47 yards at Georgia Tech. Averaged 18.7 yards per catch in the win at Indiana. Had three receptions for 56 yards against the Hoosiers. Had five receptions for 57 yards against Wake Forest. Was Carolina’s best run blocker. Led the team with 45 "domination" blocks. That was six more than any other UNC blocker. Played 598 snaps.

1997 --
Sophomore Season Caught 24 passes for 278 yards. Was named second-team All-ACC. Earned first-team All-ACC and honorable-mention All-America honors from Football News. Caught five passes for 77 yards in the Gator Bowl victory over Virginia Tech. Started 11 of 12 games, including the Gator Bowl. Did not start at Maryland because of an ankle injury, but did play in that game. Fifth-leading receiver on the team with 24 receptions and tied for second with four touchdowns. Scored four touchdowns in the first five games. Had a career-high six receptions and 76 yards at NC State. Also had five catches for 47 yards versus Wake Forest. Made a spectacular touchdown catch between two Virginia defenders. Had touchdown catches of 17 yards vs. Indiana, 11 yards vs. TCU, six yards vs. Stanford and 10 yards against UVa. Had four catches for at least 20 yards, including a 36-yard reception at TCU.

1996 -- Freshman Season
Was one of five true freshmen to play. Co-recipient of the Tar Heels’ Most Outstanding Special Teams Player award. Caught one pass for four yards against Clemson, and scored his first touchdown against Maryland when he recovered a fumble in the end zone. Was credited with nine special teams tackles and two fumble recoveries. Also recovered a fumbled punt by NC State, a turnover that led to a UNC touchdown.

New Hanover High School
All-Mideast 4-A Conference choice in 1995. Played tight end and inside linebacker. Led team in tackles, averaging 11 per game. Played every position except quarterback and guard. Coached by Glenn Sasser. Three-time state champion in the discus and 1996 champion in the shot put.

Personal
Born Algernon Darius Crumpler on Dec. 23, 1977. Greatest athletic achievement was making first-team All-ACC in 1999. Wants to improve his runs after catches. Other favorite sport is basketball. His father, Carlester Crumpler Sr., played at East Carolina and for the Buffalo Bills from 1974-77. His older brother, Carlester Jr., was a Walter Camp Foundation All-America at ECU and is currently a Minnesota Viking. His younger brother, Bryan, is a Morehead Scholar and a member of the UNC marching band. Post-college ambition is to work with children. Hobbies are reading John Grisham and James Patterson books and playing basketball. Majoring in communications.
