Prospective Student-Athlete Questionnaire
Broadway, a 23-year coaching veteran, brings to Carolina the experience of coaching on both a national championship team at Florida in 1996 and on conference championships squads at Duke in 1989 and Florida in 1995, 1996 and 2000. Last season, Carolina led the Atlantic Coast Conference and finished 15th in the nation in total defense, allowing just over 300 yards per game. Defensive tackle Ryan Sims, who combined with Julius Peppers to form one of the top defensive lines in the country, had an outstanding year under Broadway’s tutelage. He earned first-team All-ACC honors and was named a third-team All-America. The defensive MVP of Carolina's 16-10 victory over Auburn in the Peach Bowl, Sims was picked by the Kansas City Chiefs with the No. 6 overall selection in the 2002 NFL Draft. Peppers was drafted No. 2 overall by the Carolina Panthers, giving Carolina two of the top six selections in the NFL Draft. Carolina and FSU are the only two ACC schools to ever have two picks in the top six of the NFL Draft. The Peach Bowl was Broadway's ninth bowl game as a coach, including six New Year's (Jan. 1 or Jan. 2) games. At Florida, he coached in the 1995 national championship game in the Fiesta Bowl vs. Nebraska (Jan. 2, 1996) and the 1996 national championship game in the Sugar Bowl vs. Florida State (Jan. 2, 1997). He also was a member of the 1998 Citrus Bowl champion team that defeated Penn State and the 1999 Orange Bowl champion team that beat Syracuse.
Before he joined the Gators, Broadway was the defensive line coach at Duke for 14 years from 1981-94. He began his coaching career as the nose guards coach at East Carolina from 1979-80. A native of Oakboro, N.C., Broadway was a defensive tackle for the Tar Heels from 1974-77, earning first-team All-ACC honors in 1977. He helped lead Carolina to the 1974 Sun Bowl and the 1977 Liberty Bowl. Broadway, 46, is married to the former Dianne Bynum and he has a son, Kenneth (16).
