Lawson Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

Junior point guard Ty Lawson averaged 15 points and 7.5 assists in four wins and was named MVP of the Maui Classic and is the Progress Energy Performer of the Week for November 24-30, 2008.

Lawson's four-game stat totals against Chaminade, Oregon, Notre Dame and UNC Asheville included: 60 points (15.0 per game), 24 for 34 from the floor (.706), 6 for 10 three-pointers (.600), 16 for 20 free throws (.800), 13 rebounds (3.3), 30 assists (7.5 per), 3 turnovers (0.8 per) and 9 steals (2.3 per).

He was the Most Valuable Player of the EA Sports Maui Classic, leading the Tar Heels to the tournament title.

He averaged 16 points, 7.3 assists and 0.7 turnovers per game in Maui and helped UNC set a Maui record for average margin of victory. He had 19 points, six assists, no turnovers and two steals vs. Chaminade; seven points, five assists, one turnover vs. Oregon; and 22 points, 11 assists, one turnover and two steals vs. eighth-ranked Notre Dame in championship game. The Tar Heels averaged 105 points and shot 56.1 percent from the floor in the three games.

Lawson then scored 22 points with eight assists, one turnover and a career-high tying five steals (in just 21 minutes of action) Sunday vs. UNC Asheville in a 68-point Tar Heel victory. The 22 points are the most he has ever scored in the Smith Center.

Ali Hawkins provided the winning margin in North Carolina's 2-1 win over Texas A&M in the NCAA quarterfinals. Hawkins scored on her third shot attempt in a span of seven seconds after having the first two saved in the second minute of the second overtime period. The third shot found the lower left corner of the goal to send the Tar Heels to their 24th College Cup semifinals in the 27-year history of the championship.

Jessica Breland followed her MVP performance in the WNIT title game at Oklahoma with another standout week, earning MVP honors at the Junkanoo Jam tournament in the Bahamas, with a pair of double-doubles against Pacific and Oregon State. Breland and 14 points and 10 rebounds in the win over Pacific on Friday and added 13 points and 11 rebounds in the Junkanoo Jam title game win over Oregon State on Saturday. The Kelford, N.C., junior also scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds in Tuesday's win over Wofford.

MICHAEL CALLAHAN

Senior midfielder Michael Callahan sparked the Tar Heels to a pair of NCAA Tournament wins last week, including a dramatic, 3-2 overtime victory over UIC Sunday. With Carolina down a goal with just over three minutes remaining, the Cary native drilled home an unassisted strike from 12 yards to send the match to overtime. From there, classmates Brian Shriver and Garry Lewis hooked up on the OT game-winner in the 95th minute to send the Tar Heels to the NCAA quarterfinals for the fourth time since 2000. Callahan, who is UNC's senior captain, has 10 points this season on three goals and four assists.

NICK TENPENNY
174 pounds, Wrestling

Wrestling unattached, Carolina sophomore Nick Tenpenny claimed the 174-pound title Saturday at Lock Haven's Mat Town Open. Tenpenny went 4-0 on the day with a pair of major decision victories en route to the title. In the final, he scored an 18-9 victory over Shane Smith of The Ville wrestling club.

TJ YATES

Sophomore quarterback T.J. Yates completed 15 of 19 attempts for 190 yards and three touchdowns in Carolina's 28-20 victory over Duke. Yates tossed touchdown passes of 11 yards to tailback Shaun Draughn, 25 yards to wide receiver Hakeem Nicks and 32 yards to tight end Richard Quinn. Yates' pass efficiency rating for the day was 204.5.

SHAUN DRAUGHN

Sophomore, Tarboro, N.C.

Draughn rushed for 110 yards on 29 carries and scored one rushing touchdown and one receiving touchdown.

Stahl, Carolina's most versatile offensive lineman, moved from guard to center after starter Lowell Dyer went down with a shoulder injury. Stahl graded out over 80 percent and helped pave the way for tailback Shaun Draughn to rush for 110 yards and a touchdown. Carolina rushed for 179 yards in the 28-20 win over Duke.

Senior, Robersonville, N.C.

Goddard sealed Carolina's 28-20 victory over Duke when he intercepted a pass with just 20 seconds remaining and the Blue Devils deep in UNC territory. The interception was Goddard's seventh of the season, which is tied for the national lead. It was the third time this season Goddard has ended a game with a turnover. He picked off a pass in the end zone at Miami, recovered a fumble on the final play vs. Notre Dame and picked off a pass Saturday vs. Duke.
