Tuesday Talking Points

Nov. 24, 2008

By Adam Lucas

  • The Tar Heels averaged 82.3 points per game in their first three games this season. Prior to this season during the Williams era, Carolina teams had averaged 90.3 points per game in the opening three games of the season.

  • Only once has a Carolina team cruised through the Maui Invitational with three double-digit victories--the 2004-05 team demolished the field while rebounding from a season opening loss to Santa Clara.

  • To break up the trip, it's become common practice for teams to play a road game either on the way out or the way back from a far-flung tournament like the Maui Invitational. But Friday's win over UC-Santa Barbara actually broke a negative Tar Heel trend with those games. Prior to Friday, Carolina had lost its last three road games planed in tandem with a Hawaii trip--1986 at UCLA, 1989 at Alabama and 2004 against Santa Clara.

  • Roy Williams is 8-1 all-time in the Maui Invitational.

  • In the first 77 games of his Carolina career, Deon Thompson had five games with at least nine rebounds. He has two games with at least nine rebounds in the first three games of this season.
