Hansbrough Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week
March 31, 2008
Tyler Hansbrough's 28 points and 13 rebounds in the NCAA East Regional final led the Tar Heels to their 17th trip to the Final Four and earned him Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week honors ending March 30, 2008. Hansbrough scored 20 second-half points to hold off a Louisville rally that saw the Cardinals rally from a 12-point deficit at halftime to a 59-all tie. Hansbrough then scored the next seven UNC points and 11 of the next 16 to lead UNC to an 83-73 victory. He passed Sam Perkins in career scoring at UNC, moving into second place alltime. Other nominees: GRANT ZIMMERMAN Grant Zimmerman was brilliant once again for the Tar Heels as he made 14 saves and allowed only eight goals in UNC's 13-8 win over defending NCAA champion Johns Hopkins. He also had four ground balls and led the clearing game for UNC, which failed on only three of 19 chances. Zimmerman had six saves in the first quarter as the Tar Heels built a 4-0 lead despite being outshot 11-7 by the Blue Jays in the opening 15 minutes. He ended up with 13 saves through the first three quarters as the Tar Heels beat the Blue Jays on their home field for the first time since 1994. JOE KINDERWATER Freshman Joe Kinderwater finished in fifth place in the NCAA Championships in the 1650-yard freestyle last weekend, becoming UNC's first first-team All-America selection in men's swimming since 2004. Kinderwater blazed through the water in 14:53.57, his career best time and the new University record in the event. Kinderwater broke the school record of his sophomore teammate Chip Peterson, who is redshirting this season. Peterson had set the school record at 14:55.63 at last year's NCAA Championships. TAYLOR FOGLEMAN Junior Taylor Fogleman went 2-0 at No. 1 doubles with Chris Kearney and 2-0 at No. 5 singles to lead North Carolina to ACC wins over Maryland and Boston College. The wins improved UNC to 12-3 on the season and 4-0 in the ACC as Carolina ran its winning streak to 10 matches. The two singles wins give Fogleman and 14-1 singles record since January 19, 2008 with only one loss during the dual match season. UNC SECOND VARSITY EIGHT The Tar Heel second varsity eight won both of its races in Saturday's Carolina Cup, co-hosted by UNC and Duke at Lake Wheeler in Raleigh. Carolina beat George Mason with a time of 7:45.4 in its first race and Delaware in 7:58.7 in its second. The lineup was Paige Wall (coxswain), Diane Reynolds, Chandler Sours, Andi Drabot, Andrea McGovern, Kelsey Grich, JoAnne Rogers, Katie Wood and Kristi Roblin. SYDNEY CRANE Sydney Crane tied for fifth place at the Bryan National Collegiate in Browns Summit, N.C. Crane fired a two-over-par 74 in the first round followed by two three-over 75s in the final two rounds. Her eight-over 224 total was just eight strokes behind individual champion Stacy Lewis of Arkansas who posted an even par 216 total. The Tar Heels finished in ninth place with a 930 total after posting rounds of 300-314-316. Carolina's next event is the ACC Championship to be played April 18-20 at the LPGA International Golf Course in Daytona Beach, Fla. CHRISTINE NGUYEN Nguyen, who was named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League MVP on Friday, won the all-around title at the conference meet with a personal-best score of 39.475. She also won the vault with a personal best of 9.950.
