Hansbrough Named First-Team All-America by Rupp Award

March 23, 2006

The Commonwealth Athletic Club of Kentucky announced today its selections for the 2006 Adolph Rupp All- American Team. The field of 5 Division 1 players includes: Tyler Hansbrough (North Carolina), J.J. Redick (Duke), Adam Morrison (Gonzaga), Brandon Roy (Washington) and Rudy Gay (Connecticut).

The awards are named after the legendary University of Kentucky coach, who retired in 1972 with 876 victories and four NCAA championships to his credit. Among men's NCAA coaches with over 500 career wins, Adolph Rupp still maintains the highest winning percentage of all time at 82.2%. Rupp's 876 victories stood as the best in college basketball for over 30 years until surpassed by Dean Smith who retired with 879.

The 6-9, 235-pound Hansbrough, from Poplar Bluff, Mo., averaged 18.9 points and 7.8 rebounds for North Carolina to become the first North Carolina freshman to lead the Tar Heels in both categories.

Hansbrough led all freshmen in the nation with a .570 field goal shooting percentage and was the first freshman to be a unanimous all-Atlantic Coast Conference first-team selection.
