Postgame Notes from UNC-Maryland

Feb. 10, 2001

Recap | Box Score

  • Jason Capel scored a career-high 27 points. His previous high was 23 vs. UNLV in Charlotte on December 3, 1999. His previous high this year was 20 against Duke on February 1.

  • Capel matched his career high with four three-point baskets. He also had four at Clemson on Feb. 6, 2000.

  • Julius Peppers made his first career start due to Kris Lang's sore right ankle. Peppers made a career high seven field goals and had a career high 18 points. His previous high was 14 on two occasions, both against Georgia Tech at home (one last year, one two games ago).

  • Ronald Curry had a career-high eight assists. His previous high was seven on three occasions, one of them at Maryland earlier this year.

  • Joseph Forte scored 23 points, the seventh game in a row he has scored 20 plus points and the 13th time he has done it in the last 17 games.

  • This was the first time this year and only the second in two years that Forte scored 20 or more points and was not UNC's leading scorer. It happened last year in the home loss to Duke (Cota had 21 and Forte had 20).

  • Since scoring seven points against Maryland in his first game against the Terps as a freshman, Joseph Forte has now scored 26, 26 and 23 points in the last three games against Maryland.

  • Carolina shot a season-high 58.3 percent from the floor. The Tar Heels made 35 of 60 baskets. That was the highest FG percentage in a game by Carolina since shooting 59.1 percent at Florida State last February 23.

  • The Tar Heels also made a season-high 70 percent from three-point range (7 of 10). The previous high was 68.8 at Appalachian State (11 of 16).

  • The Tar Heels also shot a season-high 95.0 percent from the free throw line (19 of 20). The previous high was 86.1 percent against Marquette (31 of 36). The 95 percent shooting is Carolina's best since going 12 for 12 against Georgia Tech on Jan. 29, 2000.

  • Carolina has won 18 games in a row for the first time since 1985-86 when the Tar Heels opened the season with 21 consecutive wins. It is the longest current win streak in the nation.

  • Carolina is 11-0 in the ACC for the first time since going a perfect 14-0 in 1986-87.

  • Carolina is one win shy of equaling its win total from last season.

  • Carolina and Maryland have now played 31 consecutive games in which the winning team scored at least 75 points. Carolina and Duke have played 11 such games, UNC and Virginia have played three, Carolina and Clemson, Florida State and Wake Forest have played one apiece.

  • Carolina has won four of the last five games against the Terrapins.

  • Carolina has won both regular-season games against Maryland for the first time since sweeping both games in 1993-94.

  • Carolina's 11-game ACC win streak is its longest since winning 16 in a row in 1986-87 and 1987-88.

  • This is the 21st time in history that UNC has won at least 11 ACC games. It is the first time UNC has won at least 11 ACC games since going 13-3 in 1997-98.

  • Carolina has shot 59.8 percent from the field in the last three halves. UNC shot 46.7 percent in the first half at Wake Forest. The Tar Heels then shot 63.6 percent in the second half at Wake Forest, shot 58.6 percent in the first half today and shot 58.1 percent in the second half vs. the Terps.

  • This is the second time in four games that the Tar Heels shot 50 percent or better from the field in both halves and they did it both times against Top 20 teams (Duke and Maryland). Carolina also shot 50 percent-plus in both halves against Virginia, Clemson, Buffalo and Appalachian State.
