A bright young mind in college coaching, assistant coach C.B. McGrath is in his seventh year at North Carolina and his 11th season as a member of Roy Williams' basketball staff. McGrath played point guard for Williams at Kansas. He was a team captain in 1997-98 and lettered in four seasons. In addition to his bench duties, McGrath oversees the Roy Williams Carolina Basketball Camp and the team's coaches clinic. He has served for three seasons as the head coach of the UNC junior varsity program. Last season, UNC won its second NCAA championship in the last five seasons and made its third Final Four appearance in five years. Ty Lawson won the Cousy Award as the nation's top point guard. Carolina won the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament and regular season titles. The Tar Heels also reached the NCAA Final Four. In 2007 McGrath helped guide Carolina to a 31-7 record, a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season title and the 2007 ACC Tournament championship. In his first season as an assistant, the Tar Heels went 33-4, won the ACC regular-season title with a 14-2 record and claimed the 2005 NCAA championship. Point guard Raymond Felton earned first-team All-ACC and was the winner of the Bob Cousy Award. In his 10 years on Williams' staff at Kansas and Carolina, those teams have a combined record of 289-66 (81.4 percent) and played in five Final Fours. McGrath earned a scholarship prior to the start of his freshman season at Kansas. He was the top reserve behind first-team All-America Jacque Vaughn in 1994-95 and Ryan Robertson as a senior. During his playing career the Jayhawks won four Big Eight or Big 12 regular-season championships and the Big 12 Tournament championship in 1997 and 1998. Kansas went 123-17 and was ranked No. 5, 4, 1 and 2 in the nation, respectively, in the final Associated Press polls. The Jayhawks were a perfect 58-0 at Allen Fieldhouse in McGrath's career. In 1997-98 McGrath was a tri-captain. McGrath roomed with current Tar Heel assistant coach Jerod Haase. McGrath played in 112 career games, scored 82 points, had 113 assists and 35 steals. He had a better than 2:1 assist to turnover ratio, including 61 assists and just 24 turnovers as a senior. His first basket as a freshman came on a three-pointer at NC State's Reynolds Coliseum. He was a two-time Academic All-Big 12 selection. Colin Bryan (C.B.) McGrath was born Nov. 21, 1975, in Indianapolis, Ind. He is one of 20 members of his family who attended the University of Kansas. McGrath attended Topeka West High School, where he earned 13 varsity letters in basketball, cross country, track and golf. He was the Kansas High School Player of the Year in basketball as a senior and placed in the top 10 in the state in cross country and golf. He earned a B.A. in human biology and a master's degree in education. McGrath's wife, Kris, played tennis at KU, where she was the Big 12 Player of the Year. The couple have twin daughters, Kate and Addison, born in 2006. Their son, Hunter, was born in August 2008. |
