Carolina's Pressure is Too Much for Quakers
Nov. 21, 2008
By Ben Baden Chapel Hill- The Tar Heels (4-0) got off to a slow start Tuesday in the Smith Center, but they picked up their defensive intensity and defeated the Quakers, 95-58. Coach C.B. McGrath was visibly frustrated with his team in the first half. "The first thirteen minutes of the game we were not very good, but then after that the intensity was there and people have some energy and we had some life about us," McGrath said. "So I was much more pleased." After starting 2-16 from the field, the Tar Heels started pressing the Quakers to help jump-start their offense. That allowed the Tar Heels to get a string off easy layups off steals from their guards and set the tempo for the rest of the game. "We came out really slow so we just decided to use our press to create offense from our defense," starting forward Claude Shields said. "After the first thirteen minutes our defense was really good." The junior varsity team doesn't have any planned press schemes. They just use the press to trap players on the sidelines. "We got some presses to run after free throws, but nothing after we score of after misses or anything like that," McGrath said. Ryan Delapp, David Dupont, Claude Shields and C.J. Scott all finished with 12 points. The Tar Heels will look for their fourth straight win against Central Carolina Community College in the Smith Center on Sunday, Nov. 30.
