Nov. 18, 2007
By Ben Baden CHAPEL HILL - The junior varsity Tar Heels looked sharp in their game Thursday night as they cruised to their fourth victory in as many games this year. The Tar Heels played their best all-around game this season, scoring over 100 for the third time, forcing 29 turnovers and holding their opponent to a season-low 56 points to remain undefeated. "Our job was to be the best team we can be," said head coach Jerod Haase. "The score didn't matter." The Tar Heels took care of the ball committing a season-low 12 turnovers of their own, and they were able to get a lot of shots up to finish with 107 points. Carolina didn't have much trouble with Montreat College (Montreat, N.C.), and Haase said they weren't paying attention to the score but more so to improving and preparing for their next game against Sinclair Community College on Tuesday night. Co-leading scorer James Gallagher said the junior varsity team used Sunday's blowout to get some of the newer players more playing time and to fine tune their plays. The Tar Heels had a 25-point lead at halftime that quickly swelled in the second half as Montreat was held scoreless for about nine minutes in the middle of the half. Montreat wasn't able to put up much of a fight in the second half, only scoring 26 points. All 14 of the Tar Heels scored, and five players finished in double figures, including Terrence Petree, Thomas Thornton and Marcus Wilson, who all finished with 10 points each. Petree added four steals, while Thornton snatched five of his own. Guards Alex Craig and Robert Johnson led the team with four assists each, and forward Brad Jones led the team with five rebounds. The Tar Heels look to go 5-0 as they play Sinclair Community who will be traveling all the way from Dayton, Ohio on Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
