Tar Heels Outlast Pfeiffer, 112-87
Nov. 09, 2007
By Ben Baden CHAPEL HILL - The Tar Heels junior varsity team scored well over 100 points for the second time in as many games as they took down Pfeiffer (Charlotte, NC), 112-87. Pfeiffer held their own against the Tar Heels in the first half, but the Heels ran Pfeiffer off the court in the second half outscoring them by 33. Pfeiffer's aggressive press defense seemed to take the Heels a little off guard in the first half as the Heels committed 10 turnovers and found themselves only winning by 2 at the half. "It was a player's game, not a coach's game," head coach Jerod Haase said. "They had to play hard and be strong." Pfeiffer was able to match the Heel's high powered offense for most of the game making 15 three-point shots, but the Heels took over the 2nd half with solid defense that led to a lot of easy fast-break points. "We started outletting the ball real well," said sophomore and second-year player Brad Jones who finished with 15 points. The Heels held on to a thin lead all game. They increased it to 12 with 10 minutes to go and never looked back. Pfeiffer was noticeably tired and ran out gas as the Heels outscored Pfeiffer 64-31 and forced 14 turnovers in the second half. "I know that they wouldn't be able to keep that up all game," said junior and second-year player Terrance Petree who finished the game with 14 points. James Gallagher led the Heels in scoring with 24, shooting 2-3 from behind the arc and a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw line. "I shot the ball pretty well, and my teammates got me the ball," Gallagher said. The Heels fielded their full roster for the first time this year as Haase gave all 14 guys decent time on the floor. The Heels look to go 3-0 as they take on Laurinberg Prep. Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Smith Center.
