By Ben Baden CHAPEL HILL - Catawba Valley Community College was able to keep the game close in the first half, but was dominated by the Tar Heels in the second half as the junior varsity team won 81-58. Regularly scheduled Montrose Christian couldn't make it to Chapel Hill Saturday so the junior varsity team played Catawba Valley C.C. instead. The junior varsity team went into the locker room at halftime down 2 after they missed a lot of easy lay-ups and free throws, but outscored Catawba Valley C.C. 57-32 in the second half to move to 10-3 on the season. "In the first half we played hard but just weren't effective," head coach Jerod Haase said. The Tar Heels shot 57% as a team and starting center Ford Tanner led the team in scoring with 18 points shooting 7-9 from the field. "Coach Haase told us we knew what we were capable of," Tanner said. "We realized what we needed to do in the second half and came out and did it." James Gallagher and Thomas Thornton were the only other junior varsity players to finish in double-figures as they finished with 15 and 10 respectively. "That's a good win for us because it got us back in the winning ways," Haase said. The junior varsity team will play its final game against King College Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
