Four former University of North Carolina baseball players were named to the Atlantic Coast Conference's 50th anniversary team, which was announced today by ACC commissioner John Swofford. The 52-member team was voted on by the nine league institutions as decided by the league's 50th Anniversary Committee.

Scott Bankhead, Scott Bradley, B.J. Surhoff and Walt Weiss were Carolina's honorees on the team.

"These four players certainly distinguished themselves with outstanding careers here at Carolina," said UNC head coach Mike Fox. "They have each made a tremendous contribution to Carolina baseball and to the game of baseball in general and I couldn't be happier for them. Their success, not only here in college but in Major League Baseball, speaks to their character, work ethic and commitment to the game."

Bankhead played for five teams over 10 seasons in MLB and is now the owner and director of the North Carolina Baseball Academy in Greensboro. Bradley, who was in the big-leagues from 1984-92 is now the head coach at Princeton, Weiss moved into an administrative position with the Colorado Rockies after a 14-year professional career and Surhoff is in his 16th season in Major League Baseball. Currently on the injured list of the Atlanta Braves, Surhoff is a .281 career hitter in the majors.

Clemson led all league schools with twelve members on the Golden Anniversary team while Georgia Tech came in second with nine honorees. NC State and Wake Forest each had seven players selected, followed by Florida State (6), Carolina (4), Duke (3), Maryland (2) and Virginia with two.

Scott Bankhead (1982-1984)
Scott Bankhead holds the Carolina career record for consecutive wins and winning percentage ... He is third all-time in the ACC with a winning percentage of .889 and averaged 9.92 strikeouts per 9 innings in his career, good for 19th best in ACC history ... two-time All-ACC selection and All-America in 1984.

Scott Bradley (1979-1981)
In 1980, Scott Bradley set new ACC records for hits in a season and doubles in addition to having a 30-game hitting streak ... He was named a second team All-America before passing up his last season of eligibility to sign with the New York Yankees.

B.J. Surhoff (1983-1985)
Named first-team All-ACC three times ... He was a three-time All-America selection ... in 1985 Surhoff was named ACC Athlete of the Year, National Player of the Year, and was the No. 1 pick in the Major League Baseball Draft ... Surhoff is Carolina's career leader in batting average and is one of only two former Tar Heels to have his jersey retired.

Walt Weiss (1983-1985)
Walt Weiss was named second team All-ACC in 1983, and first team in 1984 and 85 ... Weiss was drafted in the first round of the 1985 Major League Baseball Draft and played for four teams over a period of 13 seasons before retiring in 2000.
