May 5, 2008

LUBBOCK, Texas - North Carolina leads the revised Wallace Watch with five of the 100 candidates for the 2008 Brooks Wallace College Player of the Year Award, the College Baseball Foundation announced Sunday. The standout sophomore trio of Dustin Ackley, Tim Fedroff and Kyle Seager was selected, as were starting pitchers Matt Harvey and Alex White.

With the five honorees, the Tar Heels topped Arizona State and Miami, which each had four selections. In all, there were 14 players honored from the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Ackley (.387-7-34), Fedroff (.395-9-44) and Seager (.387-8-63) rank among the top six hitters in terms of average in the ACC and own three of the league's top four hit totals. Seager leads the ACC with 63 RBI and 22 doubles.

White is Carolina's Friday starter and is second in the ACC with a 2.13 ERA over 55 innings. He sports a 7-2 record and 61 strikeouts. Harvey has emerged as the Tar Heels' Sunday starter as a freshman and is 6-2 with a 2.13 ERA in 42 1/3 innings. He has struck out 51 batters.

After an eight-day break for final exams, the Tar Heels are back in action Tuesday against North Florida at 6 p.m. at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary.
