CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina freshman right-hander Garrett Davis underwent surgery on his right elbow Thursday by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. Davis will miss the remainder of the season after pitching in two games as a rookie.

Davis, a Fremont, N.C., native, had the ulnar collateral ligament on his right elbow reconstructed, a procedure commonly known as Tommy John surgery. Davis was referred to Andrews by Carolina team orthopedic surgeon Dr. Alex Creighton.

"We all feel badly for Garrett," said UNC head coach Mike Fox. "We will miss him on the mound this season, but he will remain a big part of our team. I know that Garrett will work extremely hard during rehabilitation, and he has a very bright future at Carolina."

In 4 2/3 shutout innings this season, Davis struck out seven and allowed just three hits.
