North Carolina vs. Jacksonville Postgame Notes

June 1, 2007

Recap |  Box Score |  Quotes |  Photo Gallery

• With the 6-0 win over Jacksonville Friday, Carolina has won its last eight NCAA Tournament openers. The Tar Heels' last postseason-opening loss came in the 1998 Coral Gables (Fla.) Regional. UNC has won 10 of last 12 postseason games, including four straight at Boshamer Stadium.

• The Tar Heels have posted shutouts in two of their last three games and have allowed only two runs, both in the 3-2 ACC Tournament win against Wake Forest, over this stretch. Carolina has logged seven shutouts this season.

• At 49-12, UNC needs just one more win for its third 50-win season and its second straight. The Tar Heels won a school-record 54 games in 2006.

• With eight shutout innings Friday, senior right-hander Robert Woodard improved to 10-2 to become the 16th Tar Heel to win 10-plus games in a single season. Woodard and sophomore right-hander Adam Warren (10-0) combine to give Carolina a pair of 10-game winners in the same season for just the second time in school history, joining Scott Bankhead (11) and Roger Williams (10) in 1984.

• Woodard's win was the fourth in his postseason career. Only Derrick DePriest with five has more career NCAA Tournament wins in Carolina history.

• Woodard improved to 33-5 in his career, extending his UNC career victory record and moving into a tie for 10th in ACC history. With eight innings Friday, he now has tossed 361 career frames to move into second all-time at Carolina. Woodard is 22-0 at Boshamer Stadium.

• Woodard started the Tar Heels' first game in NCAA play for the third straight season. He opened the 2005 Gainesville Regional with a complete-game win over Notre Dame and followed with a no-decision versus Maine in Chapel Hill a year ago.

• In two of his last three NCAA starts, Woodard has pitched in shutouts. He tossed a complete-game shutout of Clemson in the 2006 College World Series.

• Catcher Tim Federowicz was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI to pace the Tar Heels' offense. Federowicz had now driven in 60 runs on the season - for the second straight year - and now has 16 career postseason RBI in just 12 games.

• Shortstop Josh Horton, who was 2-for-3 with an RBI, moved to eighth on the Tar Heels' career hit list with 247 over the last three seasons. He doubled home a run and scored in the three-run second and added a single in the sixth.

• Third baseman Chad Flack moved to ninth on Carolina's career RBI list with a run-scoring double in the third. He now has 157 career RBI over the last three years.

• Carolina had six doubles on the night, including three in a row in the third, and how has 16 doubles over the last four games, including a season-high seven against NC State in the ACC Tournament.
