Tar Heels Sweep Maryland with 4-0 Shutout Victory
April 13, 2003 COLLEGE PARK, MD.- North Carolina (26-11, 7-5 ACC) defeated Maryland (11-21, 0-11 ACC), 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at Shipley Field in College Park. With the shutout victory, the Tar Heels completed their first ACC sweep since defeating Duke three consecutive days in Durham last season. Garry Bakker (5-2) came within one out of recording Carolina's second complete game of the weekend, but Whitley Benson recorded the final out in the ninth. Bakker went 8.2 innings and scattered just six hits while striking out five and walking none. The teams remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Carolina mounted a two-out rally. Sammy Hewitt continued his hot weekend by hitting a single to right field and then coming around to score on an RBI double by Chris Iannetta. Mike Daniel followed with an RBI single which brought home Iannetta and gave the Tar Heels a 2-0 lead which would be more than enough for Bakker. Leading 3-0 in the top of the seventh inning, Carolina added an insurance run. Daniel led the inning off with a double and eventually came around to score on an RBI groundout by Greg Mangum.
Carolina returns to action with a game at home against Virginia Commonwealth on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Tar Heels then travel to East Carolina for a game on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
